Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. This page lists exactly which ones this site uses and how to switch them off. There are fewer than you might expect.

What this site actually sets

• Google Analytics (_ga, _ga_<id>) — counts visits and shows which pages get read. It tells me that a page was viewed, not who viewed it. These expire after up to two years unless you clear them sooner.
• YouTube — the videos on the homepage are embedded from YouTube using its privacy-enhanced domain, so YouTube does not set tracking cookies unless you actually play a video. Press play and Google's own cookies apply.

That is the full list. There are no advertising cookies, no retargeting pixels, no social media trackers and no third-party profiling on this site, because none of those things would make it better.

Being straight with you about consent

Analytics cookies currently load when the page does, rather than waiting for you to accept them. Under UK rules the stricter approach is to ask first, and moving to that is on the list. Until then, the instructions below switch analytics off completely, and the site works exactly the same without it.

How to turn them off

• In your browser — every modern browser can block or delete cookies for a single site. Look for Privacy or Site Settings.
• For Google Analytics everywhere — Google publishes a browser opt-out add-on that stops its analytics on every site you visit, not only this one.
• Private browsing — an incognito or private window discards everything when you close it.

Blocking these cookies costs you nothing here. No feature on this site depends on them.
